Canyon Closes Argyle

05/12/08

By Jeff Cantrell

CANYON CLOSES ARGYLE

The Eagles from the Panhandle defeated the Eagles from North Texas 11-1 and 6-3 to advance to the Regional round of class 3A baseball playoffs.  Argyle finishes its stellar season with a record of 21-10.  All of the Eagles losses have been to teams of higher classification or those that were playoff bound.

Arygle played solid baseball on the mound and in the field, but Canyon had the hot bats and led the first game 6-0 after three innings.  The top of the fourth looked promising as Jake Sizelove singled and Pat Dawkins doubled, then Trevor Cantrell walked followed by an Eddie Eckert infield hit.  Arygle could only manage one run, leaving the bases loaded and never threatened again.

The Eagles came out Saturday for game two in their home red jerseys and white pants, again playing tough baseball on defense and at the plate.  They took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Trevor hit a one out double and Jake Meeks scored (courtesy runner) on a Scotty Stewart single to RF.  Canyon scored a run in the top of the third, but Argyle countered in the bottom half when Layton Lowry drew a leadoff walk, then scored after a Mike Stein single and a Sizelove RBI infield single.  Canyon added two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to lead 6-2.  Argyle added one run in the bottom of the fifth when pinch hitter Matt Thompson lead off with a single then Lance Sutton was hit by a pitch and Jake doubled home a run.  The Eagles would get no closer.

The long ride home gave us all time to reflect on a great season loaded with wonderful memories.  It also made us realize that four chapters have come to a close.  It is not likely we will see another # 1 graciously scooping balls on the left side of the infield.  We will miss the powerful left-handed blasts from # 9 that made us all gasp.  There will no longer be a # 6 amazing us with his range in right field and ability to gun down gambling baserunners.  Few will forget the pitches # 8 kept in front of him or his hustle outside the lines.

On behalf of these four seniors this writer would like to take the "editor's prerogative" and thank all those that made their dream come true.  Each underclassman teammate that made plays, scored runs, or threw strikes helped them attain their dream.  Every coach who tirelessly ran the practices, groomed the field, tweaked the lineup, and nurtured hearts played a role.  All the parents who braved the elements, cheered the loudest, and offered support got them there.  The students and fans that faithfully encouraged the players were also a factor in reaching the goal.

Thank you 2008 Argyle Eagle Baseball.....the joy of this season will last a lifetime!
