It is exciting times for Argyle Baseball! The 2008 season kicks off this week as non-district play begins on Tuesday 2/19 at Little Elm. The team has worked hard to prepare for the opener by practicing in a fashion similar to professional spring training format. Focused, crisp workouts have created a "practice hard--play hard" mentallity! This has been revealed in four successful scrimmage games against teams from larger schools.
The players work out with pride in their upgraded facilities. These include a state-of-the-art hitting facility and bullpen. Also, the well manicured infield and outfield has been groomed all year. A new pro-style playing surface has created an infield second to none. Lastly, the new outfield fence presents an awesome atmosphere.
When asked his thoughts about the team based on early observations, first year head coach Ricky Griffin says he is "pleased with the pitchers' command....and impressed with the offensive performance by the seniors". Those seniors include four year lettermen JJ Harp (SS) and Trevor Cantrell (C), along with 2007 all-area honorees Pat Dawkins (1B) and Mike Stein (OF). That group, along with sophomore Lance Sutton (OF) and junior Caden Dickerson (DH) return from a 2007 team that had the most successful season in AHS baseball history and missed the playoffs by one game! Joining those core returnees are many players that have worked hard in summer and fall leagues to prepare themselves to contribute.
