Eagles fall in championship

The Argyle Eagles traveled to McKinney to compete in the Collin County Roundball tournament. The tournament was filled primarily with perennially successful 4A teams. A quick glance at the brackets and the first thing that jumped out were that two 3A top ten teams were at opposite ends of the bracket and a re-match was looming.

The Eagles first must run through gauntlet of very athletic 4A teams. Seagoville was up first on Thursday night. The Eagles proved to be up to the task but had to battle to the buzzer to hang on for the 61-60 win. Josh Drake led the Eagles with 17 points, followed by Caden Dickerson with 15 and Zach Pearson with 14.

The Friday night match was with Dallas Spruce who came in with a 5-1 record, its only loss against Fort Worth Dunbar. The Eagles appeared to be a worthy adversary and at the half led by three. Coach John King’s halftime adjustments appeared to work well and the Eagles stretched the lead to nine points. In the fourth quarter Spruce relied on heavy pressure and very physical play and began to frustrate the Eagles. Spruce’s rally was furious, and took a one point lead with less than ten seconds to play. Argyle point guard Caden Dickerson drove the lane with the clock ticking down and banked in a last second shot for the Argyle victory 64-63. Erik Katzen led the Eagles scoring with 17, Billy Bruce Carroll followed with 14 and Cory Dixon chipped in 12.

The Saturday morning game was against a relative unknown, Heritage High from Littleton, Colorado. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead and totally dominated the first half, heading into the locker room with a 21 point lead. Heritage bolted out of halftime and with a strong rally was able to cut the Argyle lead to four points by the end of the third. The Eagles turned up the heat and finished strong outscoring Heritage by 8 points in the fourth to close it out for the 62-50 win. Caden Dickerson led all scorers with 20 points.

At the other end of the bracket, Princeton was taking care of business also setting up the re-match with the Eagles Saturday evening. Princeton apparently spent the week with revenge on its mind.

The championship game was held at McKinney Boyd High School where just last week the Eagles enjoyed the rims quite nicely as they blistered Boyd with a 94 point offensive effort. One would think that the Eagles would feel at home after that effort, however, it appeared that rims turned against the boys from Argyle in the return visit.

Early on, Princeton was on fire and James Erger could not miss. Caden Dickerson’s shot was on for Argyle and the Eagles kept pace. Princeton seemed to be able to make any shot, falling away – driving the lane, whatever went up seemed to go in. Argyle on the other hand couldn’t buy a bucket and at the half trailed by eleven.

The Eagles stayed even in the third, but was not able to chip away at the eleven point lead. The fourth quarter rally never happened for the Eagles and Princeton was still scoring at every opportunity. The re-match would be claimed by Princeton 62-40.

Caden Dickerson led the Eagles with 16 points and was named to the all-tournament team.
