Argyle Beats Breckenridge

05/04/08

By Jeff Cantrell

ARGYLE BEATS BRECKENRIDGE

The Eagles won the best-of-three bi-district battle against the Buckaroos at Aledo High School Complex.  Argyle dropped the first game 7-6 on Friday, but swept the Saturday games 10-0 and 8-7 to advance to the next round at Snyder versus Canyon in a three game series 5/9 and 5/10.  The Eagles season record now stands at 21-8....the best in school history!

What all those in attendance for the third game Saturday will remember is the dramatic last inning comeback, scoring five runs with two outs.  The Breckenridge fans had packed their chairs and the Buckaroo coaches began putting up the equipment while the "blonde warriors" kept battling.

As impressive as the team's effort on the field was the support provided in the stands.  Argyle faithful showed up in large numbers to create a standing-room-only, Eagle-friendly atmosphere.  Many of the players admitted that the "tenth man" played a huge role in their success this weekend.

Pat Dawkins, Storm Griffin, and Scotty Stewart pitched their hearts out as the Buckaroos only hit a handful of balls hard.  All three battled and performed well to keep their team in position to win.

Several Eagles dug deep and played despite painful injuries.  Lance Sutton battled with a sore throwing wrist.  Eddie Eckert toughed out a separated shoulder and Trevor Cantrell played through a banged up glove hand.  Dawkins fought through a sore shoulder and Pat Vickery gutted out a bad back.

The first three innings of game one were scoreless.  Mike Stein made a defensive statement in the bottom of the second as he gunned down a runner at third attempting to advance.  The Breckenridge outfield was one of the best the Eagles have seen this year as they were able to make plays while the Argyle batters pounded balls their way.  However, our outfield performed even better the whole series.  Griffin started the scoring in the fourth when he singled and moved over on a Layton Lowry bunt.  Sutton and Jake Sizelove also scored that inning, and Dawkins had an RBI.  Breckenridge got one back in the bottom half on two soft singles.  Small ball added an Eagle run in the fifth as Eckert was hit-by-pitch and advanced to third via a passed ball and a Stein sacrifice, then scored on a Griffin RBI bunt.  The Bucks countered with three runs manufactured from four walks, a bloop single, and an error.  Argyle added a run in the sixth as Stewart hit a one out single, stole second, and reached third on a passed ball.  He scored on a Dawkins RBI single.  Breckenridge tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom half with a leadoff error and two singles.  Argyle took the lead in the top of the seventh when Stein lead off with a walk and went to third on a wild pitch and a Griffin bunt, then scored on a Lowry RBI bunt.  But Argyle committed two errors after Stewart struck out the first two batters and allowed two runs on a single to RF ending the game 7-6.

Argyle was the home team for game two and wore their red jerseys and white pants.  Griffin pitched a shutout allowing only only four hits over five innings and only walked one.  Sutton was 1-3 with a walk and three scores.  Stein was 1-1 hit twice as a batsman, scoring once, and producing two RBIs.  Sizelove was 2-3 with a walk and four(4) RBIs.  Dawkins was 1-3 with two RBIs and Cantrell was 1-3 with a score.  Eckert walked twice and scored once and Griffin was 2-2 with two scores and one HBP. Lowry walked twice, scored twice, and had an RBI.  Breckenridge never threatened in the 10-0 mercy rule shortend five inning game.

Game three started where game two left off as Sutton singled and scored after a passed ball and then a Sizelove RBI single.  The bottom of the first got ugly for Argyle as the Bucks sent ten batters to the plate and scored six times.  The lead off batter reached on an error, but things looked promising for Argyle as Griffin got the next two batters.  However, a walk, a couple errors, some dribblers and the Eagles were behind.  Argyle scratched out three runs and Breckenridge added one to make the score 7-3 entering the last inning.

The historic inning unfolded as follows.  Trent Cantrell (who entered at 2B for an exhausted Griffin) lead off with a walk.  Sutton batted with one out and reached as a fielder's choice.  Stein got down in the count 1-2, but worked a walk after fouling several off.  Sizelove walked to load the bases and Dawkins hit a 2 RBI single to cut the deficit to two.  Cantrell and Eckert hit two balls hard to the left side and reached on errors, but scoring Sizelove and Dawkins.  With Trevor standing on second, Stewart blasted a single to left field and Coach Griffin never hesitated sending his linebacker home as he rumbled across the plate for the go-ahead run.  Stewart got the first Buckaroo to ground out to Dawkins and then struck out the second batter.  The last chance for Breckenridge ended with a ground ball out to Trent Cantrell.
