The Argyle Eagles Basketball team will host Carrollton Creekview in the season opener at the Argyle High School gym on Tuesday night at 7:30. The evening will start with the Freshman at 5:00 followed by the JV at 6:15.

The Eagles have been ranked #8 in the TABC pre-season polls and Coach John King has his team ready. The Eagles are returning nine of ten players from last year. Added to this year's roster is sophomore Zach Dickerson who replaces Murphy Ellis who graduated.

Of the returning players, there are several All-District selections including Most Valuable Player, Clarke Overlander as well as Defensive Player of the Year Doug Fryer and District Newcomer of the Year Connor York. Other Eagles with All-District honors include Patrick Resch, Wes King, Justin Hommel and Andrew Resch. Hommel, a starting wide receiver for the football team will not be with the cagers until the Eagles finish their march to the State Football championship. The Eagles will have their deepest team in years with six seniors including the excellent ball handling of Mason Mead and sharp shooting Taylor Ishee.

This season looks to be an exciting one as the Eagles have a tough schedule to help prepare them for district play. The Eagles will compete in the Arlington Classic with mostly top area 4A and 5A teams including 4A state champion Houston Yates and perennial powerhouse Ft. Worth Dunbar.  The Eagles will also play in the Bagg Insurance tournament as well as the prestigious Whataburger tournament where they reached the finals.

Come out and support the Eagles on Tuesday night and get a poster of the team.

Eagles, Lady Eagles - compete in Whataburger tourney

The Eagles and Lady Eagles will compete in the 53rd Annual Whataburger Basketball Tournament. From the Press Release:

This year’s tournament is set for Monday, December 27, through Wednesday, December 29, and boasts 15 teams ranked in the top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC).“The Whataburger Basketball Tournament is one of the finest in the country and gives teams from all over Texas and the nation the opportunity to compete in front of major college scouts in a high spirited arena,” Tournament Director Tom Rogers said. “We look forward to seeing the passionate fans and diehard competition and expect some heated match-ups this year.”

Sports Illustrated and USA Today have called the Whataburger Basketball Tournament one of the nation’s top five holiday high school tournaments.

“Whataburger is proud to support this tournament because of the unparalleled opportunities it provides for young athletes from communities large and small,” said Preston Atkinson, Whataburger President and COO. “The true joy in this tournament comes from celebrating the players’ hard work, their dedication to the sport and the fans’ pride in their teams.”

The #6 ranked Eagles will play Van on Monday, December 27th night at 7:00. All of the boy's games will be held at Haltom High School. The Eagles likely opponent in the second round will be a re-match with #5 ranked Kennedale. The Wildcats defeated the Eagles 60-55 at Kennedale earlier in the season. Other top ranked opponents in the boys bracket include #2 Cleveland, #3 Burkburnett and #15 Lovejoy.

In last year's tournament the Eagles advanced to the championship game by beating Burkburnett, losing to Cleveland in the Finals.

The #23 ranked Lady Eagles will play all of their games at Saginaw High School. The Lady Eagles begin tournament play against Salado on Monday at 8:30 pm.

Eagles Win 53rd Annual Whataburger Tournament

The Argyle Eagles Basketball team faced a gauntlet of the state's top rated teams but prevailed to win the 53rd Whataburger Basketball Tournament capped off by a victory over Burkburnett 63-54.

The Eagles subdued the Van Vandals in the first game 86-41.

The second round game pitted the Eagles against #5 ranked Kennedale in a re-match of an early season game in which Argyle was outscored 60-55. The Eagles avenged that loss by defeating Kennedale 61-49.

The semi-final game was a re-match of last year's championship as the Eagles faced #2 ranked Cleveland. Last year, Cleveland won big but the Eagles came out firing, played relentless defense and defeated the Indians 63-53.

In the championship game, the Eagles battled #3 ranked Burkburnett.  The Bulldogs play an up tempo game with shots coming quickly on offense. The first quarter Connor York came out hot, hitting on three from behind the arc contributing to a 21-16 lead. The Eagles kept surging in the second quarter and pushed to a 35-18 lead until Burkburnett had a late rally narrowing the deficit to ten points at the half, Argyle leading 37-27.

In the third quarter Burkburnett continued to close the gap and by the beginning of the fourth quarter trailed by eight. The fourth quarter saw the Eagles lead narrow to three points and Burkburnett with the ball, but the defensive effort led by Doug Fryer and Wes King thwarted the Bulldogs and excellent defensive rebounding held off the rally.

Burkburnett coach Danny Nix had this to say: "We just had a bad shooting night. We couldn't get anything to go, and Argyle had a lot to do with it." Burkburnett did not get many second chances because of the Eagles fundamentally sound defensive play and block outs. "They are so long - they have six kids either 6'4 or 6'6 - we couldn't get any offensive rebounds," Nix said. "Our press kind of hurt them all night, but early in the game they were getting the boards, and we gave up some open 3-pointers."

Defensively, the Bulldogs press the entire game and with their deep bench sent wave after wave against the Eagles. While the Burkburnett press had some success at times, the Eagles were able to adjust and ultimately prevailed 63-54 primarliy by playing good defense and taking care of the ball down the stretch ending the game with a 6-0 run. Clarke Overlander led the team with 17 points, Connor York had 15.

Clarke Overlander was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Wes King and Doug Fryer were named to the All-Tournament team.

Congratulations to the Eagles!

Eagles Open District Play Against Gainesville Friday

The Argyle Eagles will begin District 9-3A play at home on Friday night against the Gainesville Leopards. The Eagles, ranked #2 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, will enter the contest with a 19-3 record, boasting wins over six of the current top 25 teams, including #3 Cleveland, #4 Burkburnett and #6 Kennedale.

Over the Christmas break, the Eagles competed in and won the 53rd Annual Whataburger Basketball Tournament.

The Eagles are led in scoring by Junior Clarke Overlander, a pre-season All-State selection. Clarke was honored by the Dallas Morning News in December as an Honorable Mention in the SportsDay Player of the Week. Clarke was named to the All-Tournament team at the Bagg Invitational tournament and was the MVP of the Whataburger Tournament.

Senior Doug Fryer leads in the Eagles in rebounding and is second on the team in scoring, leading the Eagles in five games including a 22 point effort in the game at Kennedale. He was was recognized for his efforts in the tournaments as well, being named to the All-Tournament teams in the Bagg and Whataburger Tournaments.

Doug and Clarke serve as team Captains.

On defense, the rangy and athletic Wes King has been a thorn in the side of opponents, usually drawing their leading scorer. Wes can score as well, draining three 3 pointers in the Lovejoy win to lead Argyle scorers.  Wes was also named to the Whataburger All-Tournament team.

Pacing the team at point guard, Connor York has been up and down in scoring, but has picked it up of late averaging in the double digits over the last four games. Connor's best scoring effort came against Nolan Catholic where he rained in 23 in the Arlington Classic Tourney, and was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Resch brothers continue to be potent offensive weapons, with Patrick, a Senior at 6'6", handling Post duties for the Eagles. Pat led Argyle in scoring with 15 against North Dallas. Andrew, a Junior at 6'5", has been tough to handle for defenses by slashing to the basket as well as shooting from outside. Andrew led the Eagles in scoring against Kaufman with 17.

Sharp shooting Seniors Taylor Ishee and Justin Hommel have had a knack of hitting the big three pointer when the Eagles need it. Ish had an 18 point night, drilling six threes against Bowie, while J Homm bombed in 20 against Van.

Senior Mason Mead and newcomer Sophomore Zach Dickerson have had big nights that just don't show up in the box score. Both have made huge contributions offensively with timely assists, as well as tireless defensive efforts that were keys in preventing late game comebacks in the Whataburger tournament against the state's top teams.

Coach John King's Eagles are not just about scoring. King has emphasized defense all season and a huge aspect of the team's success this year has been it's stingy defense. Currently, the Eagles have the #1 defense in 3A, according to the Massey Ratings.

Come out and support your Eagles as they compete in District play.

Eagles Beat Sanger, King Gets Win Number 300.

The Argyle Eagles and Coach John King took their  District 9-3A 2-0 record to Sanger on Friday night looking to extend the 13 game win streak. The Eagles (22-3), ranked #2 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, would be seeking to avenge their previous meeting as it was Sanger that handed Argyle it's last loss.  The Eagles however, would not be denied, prevailing 69-51.

The Indians, after climbing into the TABC top 25, have fallen on hard times, dropping their last five contests including two district games. With a chance to be essentially eliminated from playoff contention in their first three games, the Indians had their backs against the wall.

"We were dealing with a team tonight that was really desperate for a district win" Eagles head coach John King said. "They had a few tough goes of it early  and it put them behind the 8-ball so to speak. We knew we'd get the best they had to offer, and we did for those first three quarters."

The game started out as somewhat of a slugfest, with each team playing tough defense and scores were at a premium. Multiple lead changes and foul trouble for both teams yielded a messy first quarter.

Patrick Resch was singled out for fouls early and the Eagles found themselves without their starting Post. Nothing to worry about, just insert the younger Resch, Patrick's brother Andrew, and he went to work netting eleven points.

Clearly, Coach John King's intent was to pound it down low and the Eagles did just that. Doug Fryer and Andrew Resch took it to the Indians early and often. The Eagles opted for a ball control offense, slowing it down and hammering the low post. This yielded another dividend, foul trouble for Sanger's Hayden Smith and John Johnson. Both Johnson and Smith are top offensive players for the Indians, eventually netting 27 points between them for the night. It was on the defensive end of the court where Sanger missed them most. Fryer went to work inside pounding the paint for 18 points to lead all scorers.

After an even first quarter ending 12-12. the Indians picked up the pace offensively and eventually led 28-21. The Eagles clawed right back in it and after a rally led at halftime 34-32, thanks to the absence of Smith and Johnson.

The third quarter was more of the same, the Eagles Fryer dominating the paint and Sanger slugging back. Then Clarke Overlander got hot.

The Eagles offense opened up with Overlander and Taylor Ishee hitting threes. Mason Mead propelled the third quarter rally with a hustle play that got the Eagles fan base, the vaunted "Red Army" on their feet and roaring with approval. Mead continued with the furious effort, scoring twice on layups after steals.

Despite the Eagles asserting themselves in the third quarter, the game was still in doubt.

"We played the way the Sanger Indians play basketball," Sanger head coach Robert Sikora said. "We got after it. We were scrapping, hustling, we got the buckets on offense - if we play like that for a whole game, we're going to beat most anyone in the state."

Then the big if happened - the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles demonstrated clearly the reason why they have been successful - a deep bench. Fryer and Resch continued to hurt the Indians inside and Overlander and Ishee outside. The Argyle depth was too much, King was using his entire team. The Eagles blasted the Indians 21-6 down the stretch.

"Part of it may have been that we were just a little tired," Sikora said. "That was the best defense we've faced this year in the fourth quarter, easily. We made a few mistakes and a few turnovers. If you're going to beat the No. 2 team in the state, you can't have turnovers like that."

Defensively, Wes King was matched up with Sanger's Collin Crutsinger, who had hurt the Eagles in the early season game. Crutsinger was held scoreless by King with his usual tenacious defense. Mead and Zach Dickerson turned in excellent defensive efforts, as well as Overlander who was matched up with the Indian's prolific scorer Johnson.

The win was even more gratifying for Coach John King than normal as it was his 300th win as a head coach. The milestone was celebrated afterwards and King was lauded by the fans and cheerleaders as he approached the bus to head home. The AHS cheerleaders unfurled a banner noting King's accomplishment.

Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Aubrey on Tuesday night.

Coach John King is pictured with the AHS cheerleaders congratulating him on his 300th win.

Clarke Overlander had 17 points and York scored 16, as Argyle broke away from Texarkana Liberty-Eylau in the second quarter and then cruised to a 55-42 win in a Class 3A Region II semifinal at Texas A&M-Commerce's Field House.
