Argyle Beats Breckenridge

Canyon Closes Argyle

05/12/08

By Jeff Cantrell

CANYON CLOSES ARGYLE

The Eagles from the Panhandle defeated the Eagles from North Texas 11-1 and 6-3 to advance to the Regional round of class 3A baseball playoffs.  Argyle finishes its stellar season with a record of 21-10.  All of the Eagles losses have been to teams of higher classification or those that were playoff bound.

Arygle played solid baseball on the mound and in the field, but Canyon had the hot bats and led the first game 6-0 after three innings.  The top of the fourth looked promising as Jake Sizelove singled and Pat Dawkins doubled, then Trevor Cantrell walked followed by an Eddie Eckert infield hit.  Arygle could only manage one run, leaving the bases loaded and never threatened again.

The Eagles came out Saturday for game two in their home red jerseys and white pants, again playing tough baseball on defense and at the plate.  They took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Trevor hit a one out double and Jake Meeks scored (courtesy runner) on a Scotty Stewart single to RF.  Canyon scored a run in the top of the third, but Argyle countered in the bottom half when Layton Lowry drew a leadoff walk, then scored after a Mike Stein single and a Sizelove RBI infield single.  Canyon added two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to lead 6-2.  Argyle added one run in the bottom of the fifth when pinch hitter Matt Thompson lead off with a single then Lance Sutton was hit by a pitch and Jake doubled home a run.  The Eagles would get no closer.

The long ride home gave us all time to reflect on a great season loaded with wonderful memories.  It also made us realize that four chapters have come to a close.  It is not likely we will see another # 1 graciously scooping balls on the left side of the infield.  We will miss the powerful left-handed blasts from # 9 that made us all gasp.  There will no longer be a # 6 amazing us with his range in right field and ability to gun down gambling baserunners.  Few will forget the pitches # 8 kept in front of him or his hustle outside the lines.

On behalf of these four seniors this writer would like to take the "editor's prerogative" and thank all those that made their dream come true.  Each underclassman teammate that made plays, scored runs, or threw strikes helped them attain their dream.  Every coach who tirelessly ran the practices, groomed the field, tweaked the lineup, and nurtured hearts played a role.  All the parents who braved the elements, cheered the loudest, and offered support got them there.  The students and fans that faithfully encouraged the players were also a factor in reaching the goal.

Thank you 2008 Argyle Eagle Baseball.....the joy of this season will last a lifetime!

Eagles Blast Bearcats

04/20/08

By Jeff Cantrell

Argyle used a plethora of extra-base hits to out slug Whitesboro 10-5 to extend their winning streak. The district mark now stands at 11-2 (17-7) with one regular season game remaining.

Eddie Eckert (2-3, 2 RBIs, 2 scores) had the big bop over the RCF fence in the fifth inning. Layton Lowry (1-3, score) lead off the second inning with a standup triple to RCF. Lance Sutton (1-3, 3 scores) lead off the game with a LF double, Pat Dawkins (3-4, 4 RBIs, 2 scores) smashed a double in the sixth inning, and Eckert blasted one in the third.

The Eagles opened the game with three runs courtesy of Sutton's double, three walks, two passed balls, a Dawkins RBI single, and an Eckert RBI deep fly ball. Argyle added another run in the second inning after Lowry lead off with a triple and scored on an RBI bunt by Scotty Stewart. Whitesboro cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second via three singles, an error, and a hit batsman. Eckert then hit his two out double in the third inning and scored on Storm Griffin's RBI single. The bottom of the third was scoreless, highlighted by Sutton's diving catch to rob the clean-up batter of a base hit. He then lead off the top of the fourth inning drawing a base-on-balls and advanced to third base on consecutive passed balls, ultimately scoring on a Dawkins single. Eckert's jack made the score 7-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but a Bearcat leadoff double and an error cut the lead to 7-3. Sutton and Jake Sizelove both drew walks in the sixth inning, and scored on Dawkins' double, who scored himself on a passed ball. Whitesboro added two more runs on two singles, an error, and a hit batsman, but could muster no more. The last out of the game was recorded on a diving catch of a deep pop foul by right fielder Mike Stein.

Pat Dawkins started the game on the mound going 2 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 2 batters. Scotty Stewart came on in relief spreading 5 hits over 4 and 2/3 innings and giving up only two earned runs. He also struck out 6 Bearcats.

Argyle travels to Pilot Point Tuesday 4/22 at 4:30 to close out the regular season.

Eagle Baseball season kicks off on 2/19

02/17/08

By Jeff Cantrell

Practice hard-play hard

It is exciting times for Argyle Baseball!  The 2008 season kicks off this week as non-district play begins on Tuesday 2/19 at Little Elm.  The team has worked hard to prepare for the opener by practicing in a fashion similar to professional spring training format.  Focused, crisp workouts have created a "practice hard--play hard" mentallity!  This has been revealed in four successful scrimmage games against teams from larger schools.
The players work out with pride in their upgraded facilities. These include a state-of-the-art hitting facility and bullpen.  Also, the well manicured infield and outfield has been groomed all year.  A new pro-style playing surface has created an infield second to none.  Lastly, the new outfield fence presents an awesome atmosphere.
When asked his thoughts about the team based on early observations, first year head coach Ricky Griffin says he is "pleased with the pitchers' command....and impressed with the offensive performance by the seniors".  Those seniors include four year lettermen JJ Harp (SS) and Trevor Cantrell (C), along with 2007 all-area honorees Pat Dawkins (1B) and Mike Stein (OF).  That group, along with sophomore Lance Sutton (OF) and junior Caden Dickerson (DH) return from a 2007 team that had the most successful season in AHS baseball history and missed the playoffs by one game!  Joining those core returnees are many players that have worked hard in summer and fall leagues to prepare themselves to contribute.

Eagles come out swinging - win opener

The first game of the 2008 baseball season started off as a pitcher's duel.  With the score tied at zero in the early innings Eagle fans arrived from Justin after watching the Lady Eagle basketball team defeat Decatur.  As the students from that game arrived, so did the hits for Argyle baseball....blowing the game open en route to a 7-0 victory.

Pitcher JJ Harp pitched 5 and 1/3 shutout innings giving up only one hit with nine strikeouts.  Storm Griffin came on in relief to seal the deal pitching 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs and no hits while striking out four batters.

Designated hitter Eddie Eckert lead the offensive charge with two doubles and two RBIs.  Griffin and Pat Dawkins also added two RBIs each, while Scotty Stewart added the 7th RBI on a single.  Harp also had a double, but his most impressive at bat ended when a ball he hit to the deepest part of the field was grabbed by the centerfielder on the top of the fence to rob him of a sure home run.  Joining Eckert with  a "multi-hit" game was Trevor Cantrell who had two singles and scored two runs. Lance Sutton, Jake Sizelove, Harp, Eckert, and Griffin all score runs.

Despite the impressive offensive, defensive, and pitching performance, Coach Griffin said he was "most pleased with the pitchers only giving up three walks in seven innings".  The team bunted well and ran the bases well, including a heads up play by pinch runner Ty McIlwain.  He scored from first base with two outs by hustling around the bases on what appeared to be a routine pop fly that was misplayed by Little Elm.

The Eagles resume play Thursday thru Saturday at the Denison Invitational Tournament.
