After battling three tough opponents the Argyle Eagles boys basketball team has advanced to the championship game of the 52nd annual Whataburger basketball tournament. The Eagles defeated 1A #1 ranked Cayuga 63-58 on Monday. Tuesday's first game was against #6 ranked 2A Tuscola Jim Ned 46-38. In the late night game on Tuesday the Eagles took on what was supposed to be their biggest challenge of the season against Burkburnett ranked #9 in 3A and pummeled them 79-49.
Tonight's game will be a very tough match-up with the Eagles facing one of 3A's top teams, Cleveland with a 15-1 record has them ranked #2 in the state.
The championship game will be held tonight (Wednesday) at Haltom High School. Tip off is at 7:45.
In what has been an annual event, the Argyle Eagles varsity boys basketball team joins top basketball teams from the state at the Whataburger basketball tournament. This year is no different, but now the Lady Eagles join them as well.
For the first time since 1977, there won’t be a 4A Division played out at the Whataburger Basketball Tournament. In its stead will be 16 teams competing in the event’s first girls division at Saginaw High School. Tournament director Tom Rogers said organizers decided to go in a different direction because of lack of support the last four or five years for the White Division
“We had had trouble with attendance the last four or five years in the 4A and White division and we asked the coaches to drum up support and fans and stuff like that,” Rogers said. “Unfortunately it did not work, so we had to make a decision on which way we wanted to move in 2009 .“We wanted to keep three divisions, so we thought it was a great time to add a girls division to our tournament.
The Blue Boys tournament pits all the top teams from last years tournament. Burkburnett will be looking to avenge their loss in the finals, while Argyle and Peaster will be out to reach the finals this year. Ponder is back, ready to defend it's 2008 title.
The tournament is held Monday-Wednesday, boys at Haltom High School, girls at Saginaw High School Championship games: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Tickets: $6 per venue Monday, $7 per venue on Tuesday and Wednesday, $17 for access to one venue for all three days, $30 for access to all three venues for all three days (includes T-shirt and program.New this year, the Whataburger Basketball Tournament is going real-time. 51st Whataburger basketball tournament bracket for boys
Article from the Denton Record-Chronicle
DALLAS – A foul-heavy first half and spotty shooting made the Class boys 3A area playoff game between Argyle and Crandall a low-scoring affair. But Argyle was able to come out on top with a 38-33 win. With the win, Argyle advances to the Regional quarterfinals on Monday against either Paris or Ranchview. When Argyle and Crandall faced off before, Crandall won 50-43 in overtime. “Going in, I figured this would be a low scoring game, and I hoped we would have scored more,” King said. “But we're getting better every night and we're surviving.” Leading the way for Argyle (25-8) was junior forward Justin Fryer, who was able to hit all of his free throws en route to an eight-point performance, But it was the work of sophomore point guard Connor York and his 3-point shooting that helped keep Argyle in the lead. Argyle started out the game with immediate possession after Crandall's 6'5” center Hunter Vess was issued a technical foul during warm-ups for dunking the ball before the game. Argyle's Clarke Overlander hit both free throws putting the Eagles up 2-0 before the first second ticked off the clock. “That was a huge mistake on their part and we ended up getting the ball early on and that was big,” King said. However, after the first quarter, some sharp shooting coined by a pair of threes from Crandall's Brandon Johnson had the score board sitting at 10 apiece early on. Argyle held a 20-13 lead at the break but saw its cushion decrease to four heading into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was the lowest scoring in the game with 13 total points going on the board, but it was hustle play from York and strong work in the paint by Fryer and Justin Hommel which proved to be the difference maker at the end of the night. “I challenged our guys in the huddle and told them that the winner of the game would end up making more plays,” King said. “In the fourth quarter, ultimately, we made more.” Argyle 38, Crandall 33 Crandall 10 3 14 6 -- 33 Argyle 10 10 11 7 -- 38 Crandall -- Brandon Johnson 9, Travis Dykman 14, James Kirbie 4, Michael Cooper 6 Argyle -- Clarke Overlander 5, Connor York 8, Patrick Resch 5, Andrew Resch 7, Doug Fryer 8, Justin Hommel 5Basketball: Argyle holds off Crandall
