ROUND ROCK -- The Argyle boys cross country team won its third straight Class 3A state title Saturday at Old Settlers Park. But the Eagles did something they didn't do in the previous two -- they won it without placing a runner in the top three.
"Our team is good from top to bottom and everybody did their job today," said Argyle boys cross country coach Bryan Beene.
It doesn't hurt when the team places three in the top 10 and another in the top 30. Argyle scored 87 team points to top second-place Lucas Lovejoy (110) and third-place Lytle (117).
Argyle junior Jake Roberts finished fourth with a time of 16:05.57. Senior Thomas Dagg finished sixth (16:29.73) and junior Austin Lyles was eighth (16:39.92).
With the previous two state titles, Argyle also had the individual state champion in Stephen Curry (2008) and Blake Woolums (2007).
The Argyle girls finished third in the team standings, but senior Colbea Harris became the program's first state champion.
"I like to get out fast and get the lead, so that's what I did today and I just stayed out front," Harris said. "This feels incredible, but I'm also happy we finished on the medal stand as a team.”
Harris crossed the finish line in 11:34.44, more than eight seconds ahead of the next runner.
"I'm so glad for her, what a great way to finish her senior year," said Argyle coach Kathi Olson.
Argyle actually tied for second with Lucas Lovejoy at 130 points apiece, so the tiebreaker went to the sixth finisher, so Lovejoy received the silver medal and Argyle the bronze.
Argyle freshman Allea Harris finished eighth in 12:17.46 and sophomore Darby Hargrove came in third at 12:46.68.
