Great Expectations

Great Expectations

Great Expectations

Since the clock ran down on the 2010 season last December, we’ve been counting down the days until we could get back on the field. That time has finally come and along with it comes great expectations for what the 2011 season could bring. Some might say that lower expectations are better so that there isn’t any added pressure or potential disappointment. Not us and not these Eagles.

Last year’s Eagles set a school record for wins in a season with 13 consecutive victories before bowing out in the regional finals to eventual state champion Carthage Bulldogs. Last year’s remarkable run included wins over top ranked Lovejoy, a 3rd consecutive district title, a comeback win over Sanger to finish the regular season undefeated, and a regional semi-finals win over Gilmer who was the defending state champion.

This year our sights are set even higher. With great success comes great expectations and this year’s Argyle Eagles embrace the challenge that comes along with them. We’re glad you’re with us as the journey gets started.

While we will miss the 21 seniors that led us last year, we’re confident that the 23 seniors that return for this season will step up and provide the leadership we’ve always expected. This year’s seniors believe it is now their time and it is their turn to lead. And they have already demonstrated through the off-season workouts, summer conditioning, and brutally hot two-a-days that they intend to leave their own legacy here in Argyle. Our seniors are joined by a group of strong new varsity players who moved up from last year’s undefeated Junior Varsity team.

The challenge for us begins with a very strong non-district schedule that includes games against 3 teams ranked among the state’s top 25. Lovejoy, a state powerhouse, will get things started before district 7-3A favorite Mineral Wells comes to town for the home opener. The Eagles then host Trinity Christian Addison, a perennial state power in private schools, followed by a long road trip to play a very tough Burkburnett squad . Non district play wraps up with a homecoming game against one of our top rivals in Prosper.

The next challenge will be from our District 9-3A opponents including games at Aubrey, Pilot Point, and Gainesville. Whitesboro will come to Eagle stadium this year. The final game of the season is against rival Sanger in what should be another great game. In fact, many in the state call this the game of the week which explains why we’ve moved the game to Thursday night so it can be televised statewide live by Channel 21; a first for Argyle and any class 3A team.

No doubt the expectations are high as these Eagles seek to build on a the three year + home winning streak, the streak of 7 consecutive playoff appearances, and 3 consecutive district titles. We’re ready for it!

Thank you for being here tonight and joining us as we begin writing the next chapter of Argyle Football.

Go Eagles!
