Lady Eagles Volleyball 2008

Lady Eagles Volleyball are Area Champions

Exciting Finish Leads to Argyle Victory Over Peaster

By Roger Frizzell

In one of the most exciting games of the year, Argyle's Lady Eagles volleyball team put together a thrilling come-back finish to defeat Peaster High School in five sets (25-14, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13).

The hard fought victory avenges last year's loss to Peaster, and places the team record on the season at 12-4.

Once again, Junior standout Jennifer Speer put together another outstanding night for the Eagles with 19 kills and one ace serve, but it was a combination of strong defensive play and a late surge of kills by Junior Samantha James that helped Argyle secure the win.

James landed six kills in the final set alone, ending the game with a total of 12 points, a season high for the Colorado transfer.

Defensive specialists Natasha Khan, Annie Frizzell and Katie Eckert, along with Libero Sydney Sanders, accounted for dozens of near-impossible saves and acrobatic digs in every set to help keep Argyle in contention, aided by strong hustle and defensive play by setters Katie McKinney and Blair O'Brien.  Each player ended the night in double digits for digs and service returns.

The front row, too, put together nearly two dozen blocks on the night, with Sophomore sensation Sawyer Camillo leading the way with four block for points to bring her total kills in the game to nine.  Adding other key scores for the Eagles were McKinney with six kills, switching from setter to right side hitter in the later portion of the game.

Senior Brittany O'Brien ended the night with four kills for Argyle, and Sophomore Madison Hoover finished with three kills. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Eagles was Blair O'Brien, Annie Frizzell, Callye Herbison and Katie Eckert, each with one point.

The game began with a rather easy win for the Eagles in the first set behind the power shots of Speer, but the second and third set saw a turn in favor of Peaster, based largely on a renewed energy by the opposing squad and a series of unforced errors by Argyle.

In the fourth set, Argyle reset its line-up, and the two teams evened the score seven different times until it reached 12-12. Speer then connected with two of her eight kills in the set, followed by two kills from Brittany O'Brien and an unexpected kill by Frizzell on a wild return that hit paydirt, leaving the Eagles up 21-15. Again Peaster battled back, but Camillo landed two blocks for points, followed by two more kills by Speer to secure the win and breath new life into the Eagles.

In the sudden-death set, Speer led off for the Lady Eagles with a big kill, followed by four consecutive kills by James to put the Eagles up 5-0. Peaster battled back, but James connected on two more kills, joined by a timely kill by McKinney and stiff team defense, to put the Eagles in position for the final victory.

At 14-10, James landed what appeared to be the winning point for the Eagles, but the play was over-ruled on a controversial call, giving the opportunity for Peaster to bring the score to 14-13. However, Argyle was not to be denied as James landed her final kill on the night to seal the win for the Eagles with an exhausted crowd cheering  the squad's gutsy come-back performance.

The Lady Eagles will play next on Friday and Saturday in its own tournament in Argyle.

Another Strong Showing for the Eagles at the NAC Tourney

Another Strong Showing for the Eagles at the NAC Tourney
By Roger Frizzell

Argyle's Lady Eagles put together another strong showing at the "Attack In Nac" tournament in Nacogdoches this past weekend, with a 3-2 finish and a trip to the championship semi-finals.

Argyle defeated Lufkin High School in the opening round in two straight sets (25-9, 25-16), but dropped a close match to ARP in three sets (23-25, 25-16, 15-25) before ending pool play with a hard-fought victory over Klein Forest  (25-13, 27-25) to win a birth in the championship bracket.

The Lady Eagles faced a tough Carthage squad in the opening round of championship bracket play, winning in three sets (12-25, 25-23, 25-20). Carthage came into the game undefeated at 3-0 in the tournament before facing the Eagles.

In the semi-finals, Argyle showed well at times, but was unable to overcome the offensive attack by John Tyler High School, losing in two sets (18-25, 23-25).

Junior all-star Jennifer Speer led the Eagles scoring in the tournament with 50 points in the five games. Sophomore standout Sawyer Camillo was next highest scorer with 25 points, while fellow sophomore Madison Hoover ended the tournament with 24 points.

Rounding out the scoring for Argyle was Seniors Callye Herbison, 13 points, Brittany O'Brien, 12 points, and Katie McKinney with five points. McKinney, who recently moved over from her right side position to take over the post for the Eagles with the recent injury to Freshman setter Blair O'Brien, continued to shine in the role.

Junior Samantha James also had a fine showing in the tournament with 10 points, including three ace serves.

During the tournament, the Eagles posted 21 aces and 20 blocks at the net for points. Likewise, the defensive backrow continued to perform well in each of the five games with Seniors Sydney Sanders, Katie Eckert, Natasha Khan and Annie Frizzell.

In one of the best come-backs of the season, Argyle was down 7-1 against John Tyler in the second set before starting a rally of its own to eventually even the score at 15-15 and 17-17. Despite the heroic performance of the Lady Eagles, John Tyler put together a string of hits of consecutive kills at the end to break away from the Eagles, 25-23, moving onto the championship finals.

Lady Eagles Finish Strong in Denton Tourney

By Roger Frizzell

Following a big win Friday night, Argyle's Lady Eagles continued to shine on Saturday to close out the annual Denton Ryan Volleyball Tournament on a high note with two more victories under their belt.

Argyle downed Corsicana in three straight sets (25-10, 25-20 and 25-11) and then handled a talented Desoto team
in three sets (25-13, 26-24, 25-12) to bring its season record to 6-2.

A strong service game and team balance was the winning formula against Corsicana as seven players landed multiple kills and five team members added ace serves to bring home the victory for the Eagles.

Senior Katie McKinney was the team leader on the game with six kills, followed by Sophomore Sawyer Camillo, Junior Jennifer Speer and Senior Callye Herbison with five kills each. Sophomore Rachel Wilkes ended the game with four ace serves and three kills, while Junior Samantha James finished with five points of her own on four kills and one service ace.

Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles was Senior Brittany O'Brien and sister Blair O'Brien with two kills each, and Senior Katie Eckert with an ace serve.

A few hours later, Argyle moved into the consolation finals of the tournament bracket again Desoto.

This time, it was the dynamic duo of McKinney and Speer who led the team in scoring, each landing 10 kills, with Camillo adding another eight kills to her growing tally to boost Argyle's potent offensive machine.

Outside hitters James and Wilkes also came up big again for the Eagles with five kills each, as well Brittany and Blair O'Brien, who combined for five kills, and Herbison with a single kill and strong blocking at the net.

As in the earlier match, Argyle's strong service game again played an important role with nine ace serves posted for the Eagles.

But it was Argyle's acrobatic defensive play that proved to be the difference with Blair O'Brien, Eckert, Sanders, Khan and Frizzell undertaking amazing digs, slides, rolls and countless saves to keep Desoto's power offense from gaining any real traction in the game.

The Lady Eagles take to the volleyball court again in an away game next Tuesday against perennial powerhouse Princeton.

Argyle Volleyball Wins Big Over Princeton

By Roger Frizzell

Avenging last year's loss in the regional semi-finals, Argyle's Lady Eagles defeated Princeton High School in three straight sets 25-13, 25-14, 25-15, to bring its season record to 7-2.

Sophomore Sawyer Camillo led the scoring for the Eagles with 18 kills and two ace serves on the game. It marked the second time this season that Camillo has hit the 20 point mark in a single game. In addition, Camillo hit the 100 point mark for the Eagles in scoring, an impressive feat in early season play.

Junior standout Jennifer Speer also posted another strong game for the Lady Eagles, landing eight kills of her own, followed by Senior Katie McKinney with five kills.

Argyle also showed well in the service game with 11 aces on the night. Five of those aces came from Sophomore Rachel Wilkes and another three were delivered by Junior Samantha James. In addition, James also ended the game with four kills from her outside hitter position.

Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles was Senior Callye Herbison with two kills and Brittany O'Brien with one kill.

Once again, the Eagles demonstrated strong defensive skills in the back row with Senior Libero Sydney Sanders, along with defensive specialists Natasha Khan, Katie Eckert and Annie Frizzell.

One setback for Argyle was the temporary loss of Freshman setter Blair O'Brien who left the game in the second set with a sprained ankle. O'Brien had already posted one kill and one ace serve before being forced to leave the game. McKinney, normally a right side hitter, was able to take over the role for the remainder of the game to help lead the Eagles to victory.

The Lady Eagles will play again on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Nacogdoches in the Attack in Nac Tourney before returning for home play on Tuesday, Aug. 25, against Peaster.

Lady Eagles Win in Three Over Nacogdoches

By Roger Frizzell

Behind a strong power offense and aggressive defensive play, Argyle's Lady Eagles volleyball team put together one of its best performances of the season, downing Nacogdoches High School in three straight sets (25-13, 25-19, 25-9).

Once again, super Sophomore Sawyer Camillo and Junior standout Jennifer Speer led the scoring for the Eagles. Camillo landed 13 kills (including three blocks at the net for points) and one ace serve to end the game with 14 points.

Speer, too, finished the game in double digits with 11 kills on the night and two ace serves for 13 total points. Both players are already approaching the 150 points mark on the season with Camillo at 149 points and Speer at 140 points.

Junior newcomer Samantha James also posted one of her best games of the year with 10 kills, along with fellow newcomer, Sophomore Madison Hoover, who ended the night with seven kills and two ace serves.

Seniors Katie McKinney and Callye Herbison finished with two points each, while Seniors Brittany O'Brien and Natasha Khan finished with one kill each. Fellow Seniors Katie Eckert and Sydney Sanders also posted ace serves in the game.

The Eagles were never in any trouble in any of the three sets with a commanding lead in each. Early in the second set, however, Nacogdoches battle to a tie the game five separate times, but the Eagles opened up the game in its favor with kills by Hoover (who posted seven kills in the second set alone), as well as big kills by Camillo and Speer.

Defensively, the Eagles put together one of its best showings on the year with all four back row players, Sanders, Khan, Eckert and Frizzell, finishing in double digits for digs and service returns.

Likewise, Argyle showed well in the service game with eight aces, in addition to the team's intimidating defensive play at the net behind the strength of Camillo and O'Brien in the middle, and strong play on the corners by Speer, Herbison, Hoover, McKinney and James.

Going into the beginning of the school year, Argyle already has posted an impressive record of 11-4 on the season. The Lady Eagles will play again next Tuesday night at home against Peaster.

Eagles Extend Win Streak, Beat Sanger

Coach John King claims 300th win

The Argyle Eagles and Coach John King took their  District 9-3A 2-0 record to Sanger on Friday night looking to extend the 13 game win streak. The Eagles (22-3), ranked #2 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, would be seeking to avenge their previous meeting as it was Sanger that handed Argyle it's last loss.  The Eagles however, would not be denied, prevailing 69-51.

The Indians, after climbing into the TABC top 25, have fallen on hard times, dropping their last five contests including two district games. With a chance to be essentially eliminated from playoff contention in their first three games, the Indians had their backs against the wall.

"We were dealing with a team tonight that was really desperate for a district win" Eagles head coach John King said. "They had a few tough goes of it early  and it put them behind the 8-ball so to speak. We knew we'd get the best they had to offer, and we did for those first three quarters."

The game started out as somewhat of a slugfest, with each team playing tough defense and scores were at a premium. Multiple lead changes and foul trouble for both teams yielded a messy first quarter.

Patrick Resch was singled out for fouls early and the Eagles found themselves without their starting Post. Nothing to worry about, just insert the younger Resch, Patrick's brother Andrew, and he went to work netting eleven points.

Clearly, Coach John King's intent was to pound it down low and the Eagles did just that. Doug Fryer and Andrew Resch took it to the Indians early and often. The Eagles opted for a ball control offense, slowing it down and hammering the low post. This yielded another dividend, foul trouble for Sanger's Hayden Smith and John Johnson. Both Johnson and Smith are top offensive players for the Indians, eventually netting 27 points between them for the night. It was on the defensive end of the court where Sanger missed them most. Fryer went to work inside pounding the paint for 18 points to lead all scorers.

After an even first quarter ending 12-12. the Indians picked up the pace offensively and eventually led 28-21. The Eagles clawed right back in it and after a rally led at halftime 34-32, thanks to the absence of Smith and Johnson.

The third quarter was more of the same, the Eagles Fryer dominating the paint and Sanger slugging back. Then Clarke Overlander got hot.

The Eagles offense opened up with Overlander and Taylor Ishee hitting threes. Mason Mead propelled the third quarter rally with a hustle play that got the Eagles fan base, the vaunted "Red Army" on their feet and roaring with approval. Mead continued with the furious effort, scoring twice on layups after steals.

Despite the Eagles asserting themselves in the third quarter, the game was still in doubt.

"We played the way the Sanger Indians play basketball," Sanger head coach Robert Sikora said. "We got after it. We were scrapping, hustling, we got the buckets on offense - if we play like that for a whole game, we're going to beat most anyone in the state."

Then the big if happened - the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles demonstrated clearly the reason why they have been successful - a deep bench. Fryer and Resch continued to hurt the Indians inside and Overlander and Ishee outside. The Argyle depth was too much, King was using his entire team. The Eagles blasted the Indians 21-6 down the stretch.

"Part of it may have been that we were just a little tired," Sikora said. "That was the best defense we've faced this year in the fourth quarter, easily. We made a few mistakes and a few turnovers. If you're going to beat the No. 2 team in the state, you can't have turnovers like that."

Defensively, Wes King was matched up with Sanger's Collin Crutsinger, who had hurt the Eagles in the early season game. Crutsinger was held scoreless by King with his usual tenacious defense. Mead and Zach Dickerson turned in excellent defensive efforts, as well as Overlander who was matched up with the Indian's prolific scorer Johnson.

The win was even more gratifying for Coach John King than normal as it was his 300th win as a head coach. The milestone was celebrated afterwards and King was lauded by the fans and cheerleaders as he approached the bus to head home. The AHS cheerleaders unfurled a banner noting King's accomplishment.

Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Aubrey on Tuesday night.
